Salem 400
Core Pillars of the Celebration
The organizers of Salem 400+ have intentionally shaped the quadricentennial to look at the city's complex history from every angle:
Honoring Indigenous Roots: The initiative heavily features the pre-colonial history of Naumkeag, recognizing it as a thriving fishing, farming, and trading hub long before 1626. The city partnered with the Massachusett Tribal Council to commission prominent Indigenous artwork and showcase native foodways.
The "Century Trees" Project: As a forward-looking environmental legacy, Salem has committed to planting 400 "Century Trees" across the city to expand the urban canopy, mitigate climate change, and preserve local green spaces for the next generation.
Signature Parks Initiative: Major preservation and infrastructure improvements are targeting six of Salem’s most utilized public parks and waterfront open spaces to ensure they stay vibrant for decades to come.
Major Events & Exhibits
If you are planning to head up to Salem to catch the quadricentennial action, there are major exhibits and festivals rolling out through the summer and fall:
🏛️ High-Profile Museum Exhibits
Peabody Essex Museum (PEM): PEM is pulling out all the stops with multiple rotating features, including Salem Stories (26 unique vignettes of the city's people and lore), Beyond the Broom (a series of short films by local filmmakers telling lesser-known local histories), and a rare viewing of foundational American documents showcasing Salem's tie to the Declaration of Independence.
The Lansdowne George Washington Portrait: Funded by a museum-grade restoration grant for the anniversary, the historic, massive portrait of Washington displayed at City Hall is being publicly unveiled as a centerpiece of the celebration.
🎪 Upcoming Summer Festivals (2026)
Food at 400+ (June 11–22): Held at the Old Town Hall, this experiential event explores four centuries of Salem's history through the lens of fishing, farming, the global spice trade, and maritime hospitality. It also features a "sister city" connection celebrating Salem's ties to East Budleigh, England (the birthplace of founder Roger Conant).
Salem 400+ Heritage Days Festival (August 1): Taking over Derby Street and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, this massive free-admission summer bash brings together local food trucks, a curated artisan market, live music, craft beverages, and interactive historical demonstrations right by the waterfront.
Salem Celebrates the 4th (July 4): Expect an elevated, extra-patriotic version of the city's annual harbor fireworks and music celebration on the clearing of the Salem Maritime Site.
